A bit about myself

Hola, Soy Cris! I am the flower friend, designer, and owner of Inecui. I want to introduce myself so you know who’s the face, muscle, and brains behind your local flower and gift shop. I hold space and do this work with much love and care for the flowers and for my community, striving to live a dignified life with reciprocal relations with humyns and all other living beings.

I grew up in the borderlands- en el calorón de Mexicali and in Tijuana. It is very serendipitous how one of the first flowers I built a relationship with was Calendula- a plant that is as bright as the sun and is easily transplanted. Calendula was one of the first flowers that taught me about abundance and the joy of interacting with each other. This queen of my heart really enjoys being harvested, and the more you harvest, the more they flower. The blooms are an amazing healing ally for skin and they are beloved by pollinators.

Even though I come from a family of farmworkers, I didn’t know much about farming or plants. My parents made all the efforts and sacrifices to send me to school and have a career, just like many other migrant families looking for a “better life.” I was always inclined to the arts and social studies. After working for years in research projects and non-profits, I felt something was missing and couldn't pinpoint what it was… I found myself needing to look for patches of soil to muddy my hands with. I would fill empty corners with seeds, echándoles la bendición and see what grew. My journey took a series of curves, and I started farming and trying to make a living through this work. Would it be possible? There was only trusting and working.

There is so much to say about the place and plants I cultivated and in turn cultivated me, pero por ahorita, I will leave you with that in order to keep this correspondence at a decent length.

Talk soon,
Cris
